Hey, Ready To Dad Crew!
Parenting in today’s world is more demanding than ever. In a recent episode of NPR’s Life Kit, host Marielle Segarra and reporter Andee Tagle dive into parental burnout—what it is, why it happens, and how to manage it. Former U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy highlights that nearly 1 in 2 parents feel completely overwhelmed by stress most days, with many also experiencing deep loneliness.
So, what’s burning parents out? It’s the relentless mental load—the invisible labor of running a household. Truthfully, moms, in particular, carry the brunt of this, with research showing they handle 71% of the mental load in their families. Burnout not only affects us as parents, but it also impacts our kids, too.
The episode offers some key strategies to fight back against burnout:
✔ Learn to recognize it -Burnout isn’t just stress; it’s a chronic state of exhaustion that drains your ability to enjoy family life.
✔ Find micro-moments of relief - Even one-minute resets can help (deep breaths, stepping outside, or simply savoring a cup of coffee).
✔ Redistribute the mental load - Have open conversations with your partner about invisible labor and what needs to shift.
✔ Make time for yourself - Find a “unicorn space”—a passion or hobby that’s just for you. Investing in yourself makes you a better parent.
✔ Build your support system - Parenting is a team sport! Lean on friends, family, and your community.
At the heart of it all? Dads matter, and prioritizing our well-being isn’t selfish. Prioritizing our health is essential.
