JAVAREE TALKS

You don’t need a magic wand to get a toddler out the door sometimes; you need a little story.

Before becoming a parent, I believed the key to cooperation was clarity: clear expectations, clear instructions, and clear consequences. But once I had a toddler, I realized something big: logic alone doesn’t move a little human who’s mid-play, mid-meltdown, or mid-refusal.

What worked? Turning routines into adventures.

  • “Let’s stomp like dinosaurs to the door!”

  • “Let’s tip top upstairs to the bathroom like ninjas in disguise and then switch into our PJs.”

  • “Time to transform into Aquaman” (aka bath time)

  • “Crunch your carrots like a dino!”

  • “Help the toys find their home so they can recharge bedtime for them, too.”

These are silly lines. They are creative parenting tools.

Storytelling and playfulness shifted the tone from resistance to cooperation, a powerful transformation that filled me with hope and optimism. This power is in your hands, too, as a parent or a professional.

Here’s the insight: Toddlers don’t respond to instructions. They react to imagination, tone, and, most importantly, emotional connection. This understanding can deepen your bond with your child or your team, fostering a more connected environment.

Whether I’m helping my son through transitions or guiding a client through change, people don’t just want direction; they want guidance. They want a story that they can feel. For instance, when I'm leading a team through a challenging project, I often use storytelling to create a shared vision and inspire collaboration.

The leadership lesson is clear:

The best influence doesn’t come from control. It comes from connection. Control is about dictating actions, while connection is about understanding and inspiring others. It’s not manipulation; it’s about creating meaning. When we tell a story, we're not trying to trick or deceive, but to create a shared understanding and a sense of purpose. And the most effective move is often the one that invites someone into a story where they belong, not a task they’re forced to complete.

So this week, whether you’re facing resistance at home or hesitation at work, try asking yourself: What story can you tell that makes cooperation feel like a journey, not a job?
