JAVAREE TALKS

When our child is upset, we often want to fix the problem, give advice, find a solution, or try to change how they feel and move on.

A few days ago, my oldest came to me feeling frustrated. The problem seemed small to me as an adult, but instead of dismissing it or trying to fix it, I just sat with him.

“I can see you’re frustrated.”

No lectures or quick fixes. The tension eased because he felt understood.

Being emotionally available means staying quietly present and resisting the urge to rush through tough conversations and feelings. True authority comes from building a connection first.

Kids calm down when they feel safe, not just because they’re told to. Being present helps them open up, and that openness leads to influence.

THE TAKEAWAY

Be there first before jumping in to fix things.

TAKEAWAY TO ACTION

  • Sit down with them instead

  • Acknowledge their feelings before giving advice

  • Take a ten-second pause before offering a solution

Being present builds authority.
