JAVAREE TALKS
Starting with the basics, I used a powerful analogy to explain voting to my son. I said, "Voting is like picking your favorite toy." This analogy, which kids thrive on, simplified the concept of individual choice for him. Just as his opinion matters when selecting a toy for the car ride to swim class, each person's vote counts in deciding important community issues. This analogy helped him feel connected to a larger whole.
I connected this to his world of The Lion Guard and Marvel superheroes: "Remember when we chose what show to watch on Disney+?" I explained that voting is how adults, including parents, family, and teachers, decide on big things for everyone. Relating voting to daily experiences, like picking a TV show, made the abstract idea of elections more tangible. This shared decision-making process, in which everyone has a voice, mirrors how society works, helping kids see the bigger picture and feel included.
To deepen his understanding, we read books about fairness and kindness and discussed how voting helps select leaders who uphold these values. This discussion helped him understand the connection between voting and the selection of leaders who uphold important values. Using story time to introduce these values builds a foundation for understanding why voting matters.
