JAVAREE TALKS
Thanksgiving was just a few days ago, and, like many dads, this past week felt like a juggling act. School closures and early dismissals. Trying to fit in work and tasks around schedules. A viral infection is moving through the house. The week where the to-do list never ends and the days blur together. Practicing gratitude during these busy times can help us stay grounded and present.
But even in weeks like this, gratitude can inspire hope, not in the big, perfect moments, but in the small ones you might overlook, reminding parents that every day holds a chance for connection.
I noticed my kids picking up on the things I said out loud. When I said, “I’m grateful we’re all home and together,” they heard it. When I said, “I appreciate how patient you were today,” they tucked that away. Speaking gratitude honestly in front of them helps it become part of our family’s rhythm, especially during weeks that test us.
As the month ends, I’m reminded that legacy is through everyday choices. In the small, messy days, when you keep showing up with love and presence, even amid chaos, you’re shaping something lasting.
Those are the moments our kids will remember.
Kids learn gratitude by watching how we move through the everyday. When we slow down enough to notice what’s good, even in a challenging week, we teach them to do the same.
Gratitude gives kids perspective and resilience. It helps them see that even when life is full of mess, there’s always something worth appreciating.
Takeaways
Say, “I’m grateful we made it through today together.”
Let them help close out the month with something simple, like picking up or choosing a song for dinner.
Share one thing you appreciated this month, and let them share something too.
These little practices help kids learn to find the good in real life, not just the highlight moments.
