JAVAREE TALKS
Authority is tested in small moments. “Time to turn it off.” No response.
The instinct is to increase intensity. Sharpen tone. Add force!
There was a day earlier this year when I felt myself getting tense. Instead of yelling, I moved closer and calmly repeated the limit. There was some pushback, a look to check if I was serious. I kept the boundary without getting louder.
Eventually, the TV turned off.
Authority isn’t about being intense. It’s about being consistent. When we get louder, kids do too. When we stay steady, they lean on that steadiness.
They are not asking if you can overpower them. They are asking if the boundary will hold.
If power looks like emotional spikes, children internalize intensity as a form of control. If power looks like calm follow-through, they internalize stability as strength.
THE TAKEAWAY
You don’t have to raise your voice to be heard.
TAKEAWAY TO ACTION
